Best Little Whorehouse in Bartlesville!!

Did I grabbed your attention? This post will not be what you might think! It is about the time Holly paid me the biggest compliment from her 5-year old world of innocence.

The movie, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas , was advertised quite a bit on tv that week, with no censoring. What no censoring in the bible belt? Whaz up with that? Dolly Parton in all her womanliness and Burt Reyolds in all his manliness sang and danced across the screen. The ad portrayed everyone singing, laughing, dancing and just having a fantastic hoe-down (wink, wink) of a time! Holly obivously had been watching a little too much tv that week.

When Friday evening rolled around Holly, Rachael and myself went with my parents to have dinner at the local Furr’s Cafeteria. You see Furr’s was quite the hot spot in our hometown on Friday and Saturday evening. I think every chair, table in the house was filled that glorious infamous night.

All of the family had chosen their favorites and placed the delicious goodies on their tray. Holly ALWAYS got the red chunks of jiggling jell-o, without fail. She would pretend the deep rich red jell-o chunks were rubies and put them on her finger as rings. One of the few places to sit was in the BIG room and about smack dab in the middle, too. We all sat down and began to enjoyed our dinner. Towards the end, Holly was up on her kness in her chair playing with, and eating her Red Rubies.

As time slowed down to a crawl, kinda like Einstein’s theory of the space time continum, Holly had a ruby on her spoon and in her loudest voice, a big happy expression on her face, she said “Mama do you know what you are?” Off handly, while feeding Rachael her favorite green beans, I replied “No, Holly, what am I?” The sweetest angel in the world hollered You are the best little whorehouse in Bartlesville!” You could have heard her three counties over! I suddenly wished I could use the Super String Theory to bounce into another dimension! But only for a teeny, tiny second of time!

The BIG room got so quite that one could hear the pin dropping in slooow moooootion! Holly, of course notice this, and began to look around the room, still holding that ruby on her spoon. Slowly, ever so slowly, people began to snicker, laugh, cough. Holly said “But, Mama, you are!” I said to Holly “Thank you, Holly, but eat your jell-0″, while trying to maintain my cool (not start laughing out of control). What would those upstanding citizens think of me laughing my head off when I had been accused of such a thing, especially by my own daughter. I really could have cared less what they thought, my mind was on how not to hurt or shame my innocent child. Time began to pick up speed and the noise in the room began to build back to it’s original klatter. My father had his head bowed down and shoveling his food in as fast as he could. My Mom was sitting very quite, trying to distract Holly from adding anymore of her train of thought.

Needless to say, my parents tried to make a hasty retreat out of the restaurant that night. I laughed for weeks after the wickeness my child criminated against me. Later, she told me that she was paying me the biggest compliment she could conjure up. The movie looked like everyone was having the time of their lives. I think the singing is what cinch it all up for Holly. Afterall, it was this child that at 6 months of age was a hooping and a hollering with Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

When I think of that precious, sweet moment when my innocent, heavenly daughter paid me the biggest compliment, I laugh.
